About Back Corner Studios

Back Corner Studios was founded by Josh Dobson, who brings more than 25 years of experience in collision repair and automotive refinishing to every project. The shop was built around a simple philosophy: put the customer first and never compromise on the quality of the repair.

Josh began preparing and painting vehicles in a family-owned business before moving into a corporate collision repair environment, where he also mentored developing painters. In 2019, his passion for custom paint, motorcycles, and hot rods drew him back toward the artistic side of automotive refinishing. Working from a makeshift paint booth in the back corner of his garage, he started painting bicycle frames and motorcycle helmets, developed his pinstriping skills, and experimented with custom finishes.

In 2021, his dedication earned him second place in the HoodMaster Painting Competition. In 2022, Josh officially opened Back Corner Studios in Stratford, Ontario, and what began as a one-person operation has since grown into a dedicated team focused on automotive restoration, collision repair, custom paint, and refinishing. His work and experience have been recognized in SATA Magazine, BodyWorx Magazine, and Collision Repair Magazine, and his custom painting has taken him to events including the Motorama Custom Car & Motorsports Expo and the Motorcycle Supershow in Toronto.

We intentionally maintain a relatively small team because we believe quality work requires attention to detail. When you bring your vehicle to us, it isn't simply another car moving through a production line. Our team takes the time to inspect the vehicle, follow the proper repair procedures, and make sure the finished repair meets both the customer's expectations and our own standards.

We believe in OEM-focused collision repair. When OEM parts are specified and appropriate for the repair, we use them, and we follow the manufacturer's repair procedures for the vehicle.

Our approach is based on doing the repair correctly rather than simply getting the vehicle back on the road as quickly as possible. That means paying attention to the details that can make the difference between a repair that looks good when it leaves the shop and a repair that continues to meet our standards long after the customer drives away.

We're upfront about the fact that our repair process may take longer than a high-volume production shop.

That's intentional.

Our goal isn't to see how many vehicles we can move through the shop. Our goal is to deliver a repair that we're proud to put our name behind. Our team is often more critical of a finished repair than the customer because we hold our own work to a very high standard.

Since opening our doors, we've had no workmanship issues requiring a vehicle to return to our shop, and we've experienced zero paint failures on repaired vehicles throughout our operation.

We're proud of that record, but more importantly, we're committed to maintaining it with every repair we complete.

Being family owned means we understand that every customer and every situation is different. We believe in being transparent, honest, and personal throughout the repair process.

When circumstances allow, we may go beyond the basic repair itself — including things such as helping with a customer's deductible or addressing unrelated prior damage at no additional charge when it makes sense for the vehicle and the situation.

We're not interested in finding ways to add unnecessary costs to a repair. We're interested in finding the right solution for the customer.
